ICS
- Introduction to College Studies
(An Exploration Program)
The
Introduction to College Studies (ICS) preparatory semester is
intended for students who have not had a positive experience with
high school but who feel strongly that they are capable of pursuing
a college education. The objective of this semester is to introduce
students to the demands of academic life at the college level.
It is also an opportunity for students who are uncertain about
a program of study at the DEC level to explore courses form different
program areas.
ICS students are required to take a college-level English course
as well as a course in Strategies for Successful College Studies.
Up to three (3) other courses are selected by the student with
the assistance of a guidance counsellor. The three courses are
chosen from the student's areas of interest, as long as the student
has the required prerequisites (if applicable) and if space is
available. Generally, students select courses in Social Science,
Creative Arts, Modern Languages or Business Administration. (Space
in other programs is extremely limited.) Moreover, the student
has the option to take a Physical Education course.
In addition to the course work, ICS includes regular group meetings.
These sessions are intended to be an ongoing orientation to college
life. Personal as well as group issues and concerns will be addressed.
Choosing a career direction and goals is a major theme of the
meetings. Career guidance facilitates choosing a DEC program for
the following semester.
In
our experience, motivation is increased through this process.
