Tutoring
The
Tutor Program is designed to help students become successful independent
learners. It is offered through the Learning Centre on the top floor
of the Library. Peer tutors (students who have been trained to tutor)
work with students on general academic strategies (note taking, exam
prep, text analysis, time management) for specific subjects (including
English, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
and help students identify with their personal learning styles. All
tutoring is free and offered to all Champlain St-Lambert students. According
to the College's internal, peer tutors help over 90% of the students
they were working with finish their courses with grades at or higher
than they expected without tutoring. Also, nearly 100% of the students
tutored report feeling that tutoring helped them to become more independent
learners.
Do
You Need a Tutor?
If you are a student who is:
- Doing
well but would like to do better
- Struggling
with classes
-
In need of educational assistance
-
In academic distress or jeopardy
-
Diagnosed with a learning disability
You
may want or need a tutor. Tutors from the Learning Center can be helpful
if you need aid in specific classes or general study techniques. Tutors
work to help guide you in your learning process, rather then act as
a teacher.
How to Get a Tutor
If
you have decided to receive tutoring aid from the Learning Center, there
are a series of steps you need to complete:
-
Make an appointment with Doreen
Kelly in the Learning Centre.
- Meet
with Doreen Kelly to assess your strengths, weaknesses, and learning
styles, to match you with the appropriate tutor. This match is based
on the course for which you need assistance, personality compatibility,
and schedule.
- Schedule
an appointment with your tutor.
-
Go for your tutoring.
Alternatively, if you have taken advantage of tutoring at the College
before, you can book a tutor via the e-Tutoring
tool in the e-Tools section of this web site.
Tips
and Reminders
- Remember
that your tutor is a guide not a teacher. Please understand that they
do not have all of the answers.
-
Tutors do not get paid when you don't show up. Therefore, it is very
important to attend all scheduled sessions.
-
Peer Tutors will not do your assignments for you.
- Email
is an excellent way to communicate with your tutor. If you are unsure
how to use email account, please let your tutor know and he or she
can assist you.
-
Be flexible with your schedule. Tutors see many clients and also take
classes and have homework themselves, so they may not be able to see
you during your first choice of times.
Twenty-four
hour notice must be given for cancellations. If you can not reach your
tutor, leave a message at the Learning Centre (450) 672-7360 x222. Failure
to do so may result in you losing access to tutorial assistance.
