About PDM

What is Publication Design & Management?

Publication Design & Management (PDM) is enjoying tremendous growth. Using state-of-the-art Macintosh and Windows computers, students learn how to combine text, numerical data, photographs, charts, and other visual elements in a document that can be printed on a laser printer or on a more advanced typesetting machine, or published on a multimedia CD or on the web. The design aspect of PDM is the study of the document production process, including determining publication format and layout for a range of documents (such as brochures, newsletters, journals, magazines, flyers and books), manipulating text and graphics using desktop publishing software such as QuarkXPress and Adobe Photoshop, proofreading galley and page proofs, and supporting (or complementing) printed production with web pages written in HTML and Javascript and produced using Macromedia Dreamweaver. The design aspect of PDM also examines submitting final drafts through electronic prepress to a printer and multimedia production using applications such as Macromedia Director.

The management component of PDM is the study of the management and editorial policy of professional publications. It examines such managerial and editorial responsibilities as defining editorial policy, reviewing and editing submissions for publication, creating a proposal for a client, advertising, billing, and running a publication business.

The study of management skills and the preparation of a business plan gives an overall view of the components necessary for running a successful business. Two desktop publishing or web design contracts have to be obtained and completed for clients, and the PDM Business Centre is used to complete these contracts.

Graduates from the Publication Design & Management program work for advertising agencies, newspapers, publishers, web design houses, and major corporations. Many also launch their own design companies or become freelance graphic artists. PDM is a hot field in today's economy. Talented graduates can count on plenty of opportunity for a lucrative career.

Design & Print Professional Examples

To get a better idea of what the design aspect of PDM entails, we suggest you look at examples of design projects created by design professionals. This link will bring you to Apple Computer's "Design & Print Stories" page. (Note: the majority of professional design work is done on the Macintosh platform.) Even though the examples were all prepared on a Macintosh computer, much of the work could have been done under Windows as well.

Web Publishing Professional Examples

See how web professionals are using the same software applications as the PDM program (Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Director, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator) to come up with very creative solutions to web-based projects.
