They will acquire the scientific knowledge and laboratory techniques they will need both at university and in their scientific careers. Students should apply for the Health Science program if they wish to pursue a career in the following fields:
Veterinary Medicine Students should apply for the Pure & Applied Science program if they wish to pursue a career in the following fields:
Champlain St-Lambert's Biology Department has long played a leadership role in college biology education. The teaching focuses on a case-based approach to ensure that students develop the problem-posing and problem-solving skills important for success in science. Another main objective is to give students the opportunity to study scientific problems the way professional health scientists approach science. This means that students spend less time listening to lectures and more time participating in group activities and studying relevant cases. Teachers in Champlain St-Lambert's Chemistry Department have found that the best way for students to succeed is by making them part of the course they take. To encourage this, the courses have a major lab component (almost half the course) so students can put into practice what they learn. Also, students are assigned high quality equipment which is for their use throughout the semester. The Department also features a Chemistry Drop-In Centre where students can go for extra help. In addition to the standard courses offered by all college physics departments, Champlain St-Lambert offers option courses which have proven to be very popular among students. The Energy and Modern Physics course, for example, teaches students the breakthroughs in contemporary physics including relativity, quantum physics, nuclear physics, atomic physics and astrophysics. There is also an emphasis on computer software applications. Another option course is Electronics. An ideal course for future Engineers, students conduct experiments in Solid State physics, power supplies, circuit analyses, communications technologies, etc. Champlain St-Lambert is equipped with state-of-the-art physics, chemistry and biology lab facilities. The Chemistry Department has four fully-equipped labs which each accommodates a maximum of 20 students. Included in the equipment available for student use is an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, a Gas Chromatograph, an Infrared Spectrophotometer, and nine Electronic Analytical Balances. The Physics Department has four fully-equipped labs, three of which are used by students to perform standard experiments and one which is used for special projects. The labs have recently been upgraded with the latest in computerized tools for data collection and analysis which will enhance the student's experimental skills that are essential for university preparation. Each lab workstation is equipped with a Pentium computer as well as sophisticated sensors and data-acquisition devices. This equipment provides students with real-time graphical displays and the means to analyze experimental results. This allows students to immediately see the outcome of their work. The Biology Department has two fully-equipped labs. They feature high quality microscopes, numerous models and a wide variety of specimens. As the first English CEGEP to introduce the practice of biotechnology into general biology courses, Champlain St-Lambert's Biology Department also features interactive videodisk technology and one of the largest collections of life science videodisks in Canada. In addition, sophisticated computer software is employed to simulate biological systems and processes, bringing to life the textbook theory in ways not otherwise possible.
Diploma of Secondary School Studies or the equivalent, including Math 536, Physics 534 and Chemistry 534. Students graduating from a French high school in Quebec must also have successfully completed English as a Second Language at the Secondary V level. Students who are missing a prerequisite will be considered for admission if they possess a strong academic record and acceptable grades in the other prerequisites. Champlain St-Lambert will offer admission to as many qualified candidates as possible. Space limitations can, however, have an impact. When too many applications are received for a particular program, students with the highest academic standing will be admitted first.
14 General Education Courses
12 Concentration Courses (3 per semester) Certain courses are compulsory for admission to a university. Students must follow a course profile that satisfies the entrance requirements of the university program they intend to follow. All science students will take the 9 common courses listed below: Math:
Chemistry:
Biology:
Physics:
In addition: Health Science students must take Chemistry BLC (Organic Chemistry I) and Biology BLB (General Biology II), plus one other Science or Math course as required to complete the 12 concentration course requirement. Pure & Applied Science students are strongly urged to take Math BLD (Calculus III) and one additional Physics course. They must also follow one more Science or Math course to complete the 12 concentration course requirement. |
