College Web Site Rules of the Road

Champlain St-Lambert seeks to provide you with the most enjoyable and rewarding online experience that we can. We seek to create an online community that can be enjoyed by everyone. In light of this goal, your use of this web site is bounded only by a set of common-sense rules that ask you to be civil and respect others when you are online. We, therefore present to you these Rules of the Road, our policies for using Champlain St-Lambert's place in cyberspace.

Like any community, we take pride in -- and are protective of -- our citizenship. That's why our community standards are important. These Community Guidelines tell you what you can expect from your experience on the Champlain St-Lambert web site, as well as the kind of online behaviour we expect of you. Community standards are always evolving, so it's important that you periodically check these Guidelines (as well as the guidelines in your favourite areas) for updates, new information, or additional safety tips.

The basic guidelines are as follows (read further for more detail):

1. USE APPROPRIATE ONLINE CONTENT

By content, we mean the text, software, communications, images, sounds, and other information provided online. Most content at our web site is provided by Champlain St-Lambert, our faculty, our staff, our sister locations, the Ministry of Education of Québec, or independent content providers under license. In general, we do not pre-screen content available at this web site. However, we do reserve the right to remove content that, in the College's judgment, does not meet its standards or does not comply with our current Community Guidelines. Likewise, we are not responsible for content available on the Internet via links from our pages, although we reserve the right to block access to any Internet area containing illegal or other harmful content or otherwise being used for purposes that are unlawful or injurious to Champlain St-Lambert or its community.

On its web site, Champlain St-Lambert does encourage the students and faculty to create their own content and voice their own opinions as long as such content and voicing of opinions abide by the rules and standards of the College. As a member of the College community, you agree to follow the Champlain St-Lambert Community Guidelines and you acknowledge that the College has the right to enforce them in its sole discretion. This means that if you violate the College Community Guidelines, the College may take action against you. This can range from the issuance of a warning about a violation to the termination of your computing privileges.

The College may prohibit or delete conduct, communication, or content on its web site that we feel violates applicable law or is harmful to other College community members. While we try to react quickly, we cannot ensure prompt editing or removal of offending content after online posting.

2. USE PROPER ONLINE CONDUCT

Any conduct by you that in Champlain St-Lambert's discretion restricts or inhibits any other member of our college community from using or enjoying the web site will not be permitted and may result in an issuance of a warning, termination of your privileges in our online community, or termination of our computing privileges.

Public areas are online areas freely open to all members of the Champlain St-Lambert community, such as public chat rooms, online tutorial areas, online forums and message boards. We try to enforce College rules to ensure enjoyment by all of the Champlain St-Lambert community, but we do not have the practical capability, nor the intention, to screen communication in advance. However, you should be aware that certain chat rooms may be used for activity that violates College rules and we take appropriate action when we are notified of such activities.

The College expects all members of its online community to be civil and to show respect for others. Conduct that is prohibited includes:

a. Offensive Communication.
Champlain St-Lambert is composed of many different communities of people. It strives to provide an interesting, stimulating and fun place for all of its communities and their members. Using abusive or hateful language undermines this goal and is not allowed. Please use your best judgment and be respectful of others. The use of vulgar language in chat rooms, online tutorial rooms, bulletin boards and other areas of expression is prohibited.

b. Harassment.
When a member of the Champlain St-Lambert community targets another to cause distress, embarrassment, unwanted attention or other discomfort, this is harassment. We do not allow harassment and may suspend or terminate computer privileges of anyone who harasses others. You may have a disagreement with someone's point of view -- we encourage lively discussion in our chat rooms and message boards -- but personal attacks are not allowed. Also prohibited are attacks based on a person's race, national origin, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or other identification

c. Posting of Graphic Files.
Champlain St-Lambert prohibits the transfer or posting on its web site, or pointing to or referencing, sexually obscene images or other content it deems offensive.

d. Room, Online Tutorial and Message Board Disruption.
Any member of the Champlain St-Lambert online community who interferes with the normal flow of dialogue in a chat room, online tutorial or on a message board will be demonstrating poor online conduct. Disruption may occur in different ways, including repeated interruptions of conversation, "scrolling" (i.e., repeatedly causing the screen to roll faster than others are able to type to it), actions that antagonize, harass or create hostility, or posting off-topic.

e. Impersonation.
This can involve the portrayal of another person or entity, such as the impersonation of a faculty member or another student or communication under a false name or a name that you are not authorized to use, such as a celebrity.

3. DO NOT ILLEGALLY USE COPYRIGHTS OR TRADEMARKS

Most content on this web site is the copyright of Champlain St-Lambert. Some content is owned by others and is protected by copyrights, trademarks, and other intellectual property rights. All content that you transmit or post on this web site must either be your own or must be transmitted with express authorization for distribution by the copyright owner.

Some areas of the Champlain St-Lambert web site are "public". These include the virtual gallery, message boards, and forums. By submitting content in these public areas, you grant visitors the right to use, reproduce, modify, distribute, etc. the content in any part, anywhere, unless otherwise stated.
